george h.w. bush out and about and governor chris christie hits back against all the fat jokes made at his expense. very good morning to you. it's nice to see you. before you head out this morning, you might want to pad your wallet. gas prices are up again. aaa puts the average price for a gallon of regular at $3.52. that is the highest average ever for the month of february. the cost up is 17 cents from just last week. drivers in states like new york and california are feeling the pinch more than others. prices there approaching $4 a gallon. that is making for extra pain at the pump. >> these higher gas prices definitely affect the way i budget my money, where i choose to live, and how i choose to spend my leisurely time. >> i'm more conscious about the distance i'm driving. >> a dollar decline in the number of oil refineries have been blamed for the increase.

the tightly knit community had been waiting to hear. >> at 3:12 this afternoon, fbi agents safely recovered the child who has been held hostage for nearly a week. >> reporter: police say the boy was being held captive by this 65-year-old after dike boarded a stopped school bus last week, shot and killed driver charles poland and abducted the child. held for nearly a week in an underground bunker beneath dike's property, the fbi said negotiations deteriorated within the last 24 hours and that dike was observed holding a gun. >> at this point, fbi agents fearing the child was in imminent danger entered the bunker and rescued the child. >> reporter: nbc news learned a diversion airy device was used and the hostage rescue team endered through a door at the top of the bunker. >> it was by the grace of god, you know, he's okay. and that was the mission of

border right now and says we can secure it but we can't completely shut it down because that would hinder trade and commerce. also today the house judiciary committee meeting. they take a look at what might be the best solution here. there's a group of democrats and republicans working behind the scenes to come up with a solution. no word yet on how much progress they've made. >> interesting. tracie potts, thank you. nbc news has obtained a confidential justice department memo that contains the legal justification for drone strikes on american citizens. the document from the justice department says the government can order the killing of americans if they're believed to be senior operational leaders of al qaeda or of an associated force. that applies even if will is no intelligence indicating that americans are engaged in an active plot to attack the united states. this document makes the case for drone strikes like the september 2011 attack that killed this operative. he was a u.s. citizen that was never indicted by the government

"the washington post" is reporting that homeland security janet napolitano is quietly making it known she's considering a run for president in 2016 if hillary decides not to run. and kitty kelly known for biographies of oprah winfrey is writing a book about the 98 women now serving in congress. last night new jersey governor chris christie paid his first visit to david letterman who in the past has skewered the new jersey governor about his weight. christie drew laughs when he pulled a donut from his pocket and ate it. he also read back some favorite letterman jokes. >> here's two of them that we like. first one was, celebrity birthday today, chris christie turned 50. he blew out the candles on his cake and he wished for another cake. a billion dollars will be spent on potato chips for super bowl

lynn, good morning. >> good morning. >> when president obama has been making a huge push for immigration as of late. he's taking the time to meet with these ceos of major companies, coca-cola, yahoo, what do you make of his strategy on immigration so far? >> well, he's trying to get in a lot of stake holders. today he is also meeting with leaders of progressive groups at the white house. and i think what he's trying to do is to help gather these outs side groups to help pressure congress to pass comprehensive measures. >> there is that hearing today. i want to talk about republicans. it's no secret they don't really farewell with the hispanic vote. and i mean this could hurt them in both congressional races, also potentially ut race for president. how do you feel they're going to play this one out? >> well, first of all, it's gotten done to the table. the reason you have these republican leaders, mccain in the senate, marco rubio, you

c.j. fair and used tough defense to beat the fighting irish 63-47. nfl commissioner says that the 34-minute power outage will not impact the city of new orleans's chance of hosting another super bowl. the halftime show did not cause the power failure because she used a separate electric generator. the tv audience in the u.s. for the super bowl was estimated at 108.4 million people. that makes it the third most watched program in tv history behind the super bowl game in 2010 and 2011. but the super bowl did set a new record of 24.1 million twitter posts. that's compared to over 13 million last year. social media around the world was way up except for some reason for people in greenland in russia. okay, and the parents of the two super bowl coaches jack and jackie harbaugh had a difficult time during the super bowl. that's according to new jersey governor chris christie who was sitting next to them. >> they looked almost physically in pain for most of the game.
